The Ships
The goal of the Northeastern Maritime Historical Foundation is to assemble a first-rate collection of historically significant vessels for preservation and display on the Great Lakes. Candidates for the collection vary from large steam powered freighters and big old dredges to small fish tugs and towing tugs. Vessels are chosen by several characteristics. For example, one may be of interest as the first of her kind, last of her kind, a particularly rare specimen, or an excellent example of a once-common class. The first vessel to join the collection is the 1908 tug Mount McKay, donated to us in 2003. At present we are actively pursuing several other acquisitions, including the 1923 triple-expansion steamer Lewis G. Harriman, which is currently awaiting her fate in a Sault Ste. Marie scrap yard. Negotiations are also underway to secure a permanent home for the collection, forming the basis of what will undoubtedly become one of the premier maritime museums in North America.
